Flexi Friday!

Flexi Friday!

Today we trialled our first 'Flexi Friday'!

This year we decided to leave Friday afternoons a little more flexible, with the hope that we could promote pupil wellbeing by deciding our timetable based on what the children need. Some children decided to practise their spellings on Spelling Shed, some children decided on a free write in their personal journals and some children decided to practise and challenge themselves with place value maths activities. We didn't prescribe what the children needed to do, but they all chose something that was very valuable to their learning which is brilliant to see in week one!!

Every child was 100% engaged for the whole 45 minutes and it was lovely to see them making the decision to focus on what they felt they needed.

In weeks to come we plan to introduce specialist PSHE lessons in this slot as and when they are needed, e.g a focus on friendship issues, if/when needed, or when focus weeks are in place such as Anti Bullying Week. Fridays afternoons are also timetabled for Art and DT activities, where we will be doing artist studies and creating our own Viking longship. Understanding that Friday afternoons are a tricky time to introduce new concepts, we hope this gives the children a more relaxed approach to the objectives we will cover.

As you can see from the pictures, the children seemed to really enjoy the freedom over their learning and I look forward to seeing what they come up with in the weeks to come.

A particular well done to Ami today, star of the week, and a wonderful person. As I said in Celebration Assembly, she is a genuinely lovely little girl who always goes the extra mile to help anyone who needs it, whether that's me or another member of the class. She has a heart of gold and is an excellent role model in terms of behaviour, attitude to learning and empathy towards others. Well done Ami, you are just fab!! :)

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing lots of people on Monday after school at the 'Meet the Teacher' meeting at 3.30.
